Conditions We Treat

What is Autoimmunity?
The body's immune system works to resist invading organisms such as bacteria, viruses and parasites. Unfortunately, the immune system sometimes malfunctions and attacks it's own body–this phenomenon is referred to as autoimmunity. An autoimmune disorder takes place when the immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys healthy body tissue within the body. The following are some of the more common autoimmune disorders:

Celiac Disease Immune Thrombocytopenic (ITP) Ankylosing Spondylitis
Stiff Person Syndrome Interstitial Cystitis Pemphigus Vulgaris
Alopecia Areata Berger's disease (IgA Nephropathy) Polymyositis
Kawasaki Disease Guillain-Barré Syndrome Primary Biliary Cirrhosis
Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia Goodpasture's Syndrome Bullous Pemphigoid
Autoimmune Hepatitis Hidradenitis Suppurativa Rheumatoid Arthritis
Sharp Syndrome Giant Cell Arteritis (Temporal Arteritis) Scleroderma (Morphea)
Wegener's Granulomatosis Graves' Disease Hashimoto's Disease
Myasthenia Gravis Isaacs' Syndrome (Neuromyotonia) Sjögren's Syndrome
Diabetes Psoriasis Addison's Disease
Dermatomyositis Vitiligo Ulcerative Colitis
Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Lupus Acute Disseminated Encephalomyelitis
Endometriosis Crohn's Disease Narcolepsy

What additional risks are increased with Autoimmunity?
Risks associated with autoimmunity include higher rates of kidney insufficiency, high blood pressure, obesity, diabetes, and heart disease compared to the rest of the seemingly healthy population. The connection of autoimmunity with inflammation, cardiovascular and renal (kidney) complications can make autoimmune disorders difficult to treat.

Who is mostly diagnosed with Autoimmune Disorders?
As a whole, autoimmune disorders represent the 4th-largest cause of disability among women in the U.S.; currently almost 80% of those affected with an autoimmune disease are women. It should be noted, however, that autoimmunity is prevalent within everyone to a certain extent. While in most people it is generally harmless, there are some that the expression is more pronounced and the cause of a variety of illnesses.

Our Methodology to Treating Autoimmune Disorders:
At ACN Wellness, we emphasize a holistic medicine approach to managing autoimmune disease in the Vienna and Leesburg and DC Metro areas. We view autoimmunity as a dynamic process that needs constant attention and surveillance. The practical results of holistic functional medicine lie in our ability to detect diseases at a much earlier stage in their progression and to evaluate the body as a whole. Holistic functional medicine allows our doctors to practice a number of nontoxic strategies for prevention and treatment of existing diseases. Our autoimmunity evaluation and treatment will emphasize the following:

Nutritional Deficiencies Hormone Deficiency or Imbalance
Inflammation Markers Toxin Exposures
Balance of Microorganisms Detoxification Pathways
Latent or Subclinical Infections Digestive Function
Family History Food Sensitivities

ACN Wellness will work to develop a personalized herbal and nutritional support program to enhance your overall health and wellness, educate you in specific lifestyle modifications and recommend certain nutritional or hormone balancing supplements. Body work such as acupuncture or Chinese therapeutic massage may also be recommended to support you.
